The Ridgeway challenge- Volunteers needed

Dear Didcot Runners,

As some of you may be aware over the August bank holiday the club has for several years been involved with the Ridgeway Challenge and this year will be no different.

The Ridgeway Challenge ( is an beautiful 86 mile Ultra-marathon from Ivinghoe Beacon to Avebury Stone Circle and this year there will be over 150 runners including our very own Paul Griffiths, Dave Knopp and Mike Suggate. The brave ladies and gent will have between 24 – 26 hours to complete the race with zero change to sleep and whatever rest they can get at one of the 9 checkpoints along the way.

Each of these checkpoints relies solely on volunteers and have vital supplies for the runners such as food, water, first aid, baggage drop and shelter. Tim the event organiser as asked us to man Goring Village Hall on Saturday August 26th. This is probably the busiest check point as it provides warm food and drink, indoor toilets, a chance to get changed in to fresh clothes, and is the half ways point in the race so people tend to retire here if they don’t feel they can make it.

So what am I asking for? The check point needs at least 16 volunteers to man the station between the hours of 4.30pm and 12.00am.

What will we be doing? Volunteers will be responsible for preparing food and drinks, checking runners in and out of the hall, sorting out baggage and marshalling the road outside.

Having run the race myself I can not stress how important these checkpoints are and without the help of Didcot Runners Tim will have a hard time manning this checkpoint. So if you are free on the evening of Saturday the 26th please let me know (email: and together we can help some fellow runs complete a monumental task.

Kind Regards,

The Didcot 5 race is just a month away (2nd July)!!

We need LOTS of volunteers to help run the event, we need marshalls, help with the water station, the start/finish area etc.

This is the club's premier event and without volunteers it wouldn't be possible. So if you are free and able to give a few hours on the morning of 2nd July to help with the race please email John Talbot with your name, email address and contact number to:

A bbq will be provided for post race, family members are welcome too.

Thank you
